PISCINA DAS MARÉS

ARCHITECTURE . ÁLVARO SIZA VIEIRA
YEAR . 1966
LOCATION .  LEÇA DA PALMEIRA, PORTUGAL

The building is positioned parallel to the road, below its level, leaving the horizon completely unobstructed from the roadway. The spaces are accessed via a gentle ramp that gradually obscures views of the traffic and the ocean. This transition between the road and the sea is designed as a sensory experience along the way, the ocean becomes only audible. Upon exiting the changing rooms, one enters a series of platforms where the water once again dominates the view, with pools appearing between the vast ocean and the complex. Surrounded by low concrete walls, natural rock formations are scattered along the edges of the pools, blending with the ocean's horizon.
